In a significant development in the Indian Air Force’s top leadership, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, AVSM, VM, has been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Air Staff (DCAS), effective from 1st June 2025. Known for his distinguished service and strategic acumen, Air Marshal Bharti now assumes one of the most crucial roles in the Air Force hierarchy.
Following his appointment, Air Marshal Bharti visited the National War Memorial in New Delhi to pay homage to the nation’s fallen heroes. Standing solemnly before the Amar Jawan Jyoti, he saluted the martyrs and expressed deep gratitude for their gallant sacrifice in service of the nation.
Who is A.K. Bharti?
Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti is a highly decorated officer of the Indian Air Force. He has had a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades. In September 2023, he was promoted to the prestigious rank of Air Marshal in recognition of his exceptional service and leadership.
A.K. Bharti was born in Jhunni Kala village in the Purnia district of Bihar. His father is Jeevachhlal Yadav, a retired clerk of Kosi Project and mother is Urmila Devi. He is the eldest among four siblings. He received his school education from Sainik School Tilaiya. He is an alumnus of National Defence Academy and Defence Services Staff College.
Military Career
A.K. Bharti was commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force on 13 June 1987. At the National Defence Academy in 1987, he topped his course for which he was awarded the Sword of Honour. He has been the Commanding Officer of No. 24 Squadron and No. 30 Squadron. He has been awarded three stars for accident-free flying (outstanding performance). He has received commendation from the Chief of Air Staff.
On 16 August 2005, he assumed command of a frontline Sukhoi-30MKI Squadron that had just been equipped with the advanced Phase III variant of the aircraft. Entrusted with a critical role, Air Marshal Bharti successfully led efforts to operationalize its cutting-edge weapon systems and formulate effective combat tactics, significantly enhancing the IAF’s strike capabilities.
Under his command, the squadron participated in key military exercises:
- Exercise Gagan Shakti: Demonstrated the concept of an “Air Dominance Force” at the IAF level.
- Exercise Indradhanush (2006): Conducted joint air drills with the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.
- Exercise Garuda (2007): Engaged in bilateral operations with the French Air Force, enhancing India’s interoperability with NATO-standard forces.
These exercises strengthened India’s global defence partnerships and showcased Bharti’s talent for operational leadership in international settings.
Role in Operation Sindoor
As the Director General of Air Operations, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti played a central role in Operation Sindoor—India’s calibrated air response to the Pahalgam terror attack. He oversaw the planning, execution, and monitoring of air operations, ensuring minimal collateral damage while effectively neutralizing terrorist targets.
His leadership during this critical period earned him nationwide respect, with many lauding his clarity, control, and commitment to ethical warfare.
Awards and Decorations
Throughout his career, Air Marshal Bharti has received multiple honours:
- Vayu Sena Medal (2008): Conferred by the President of India for his excellence in operational command and development of air tactics.
- Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2024): For distinguished service of an exceptional order, reflecting his contributions to national defence and strategic planning.
