A Jaguar fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Bhanuda village in Rajasthan’s Churu district on Wednesday afternoon. Human remains were discovered near the crash site,” confirmed SHO Kamlesh, suggesting possible fatalities. However, an official statement from the IAF regarding casualties is still awaited. The aircraft went down at approximately 1:25 PM, causing a loud explosion and sparking flames in nearby agricultural fields.
Crash Details
According to local sources and initial IAF inputs:
- The crash site lies in Ratangarh tehsil, about 60 km from Churu town.
- Human remains were discovered near the crash site, and the aircraft was completely destroyed.
- Villagers rushed to the site after hearing the deafening blast and witnessing thick smoke rising from the field.
Fire tenders, police personnel, Indian Army units, and IAF recovery teams were immediately dispatched to the area. District Collector Abhishek Surana and senior administrative officers are overseeing the situation.
Aircraft on Routine Mission
The Jaguar jet, a deep penetration strike aircraft developed for ground attack, was reportedly on a routine training sortie. While the exact cause of the accident is under investigation, sources suggest it could be due to technical malfunction or mechanical failure. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
econd Jaguar Crash in 3 Months
This is not an isolated incident. The IAF’s Jaguar fleet has suffered multiple crashes recently:
- In March 2025, a Jaguar jet crashed in Haryana, with both pilots managing to eject safely.
- In April 2025, another Jaguar went down in Gujarat, resulting in the death of one pilot.
These back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns about the airworthiness and maintenance of the aging Jaguar fleet, which is scheduled for phased retirement by 2031.
Eyewitness Account
A local villager who witnessed the crash told Aryavart Herald:
“We heard a huge bang and saw flames. The plane hit the ground hard. We tried to douse the fire using water and sand until help arrived.”
Several villagers tried to pull the pilot out, but he was found already deceased amidst the debris.
National Security and IAF Fleet Modernization
The Jaguar fleet has been a crucial part of India’s defense strategy for decades, especially in ground attack and maritime strike roles. However, with frequent crashes and outdated systems, there is growing pressure on the government and the Air Force to accelerate modernization efforts and introduce newer aircraft platforms like the LCA Tejas, Rafale, and AMCA.
