“Danny Denzongpa, celebrated for his legendary acting career, has also built an extraordinary legacy in the business world with Yuksom Breweries. Founded in 1987 in South Sikkim, the company has grown to become India’s third-largest beer brand, producing nearly three million cases annually. While Vijay Mallya is often credited with transforming India’s beer market, turning beer into a household staple and dominating the industry, he faced an unexpected challenger in Denzongpa. By outmaneuvering Mallya’s United Breweries in the northeastern market, Yuksom Breweries delivered a rare defeat to the ‘King of Good Times,’ proving that even giants can be toppled with the right vision and strategy.”
The Yuksom Breweries
Yuksom Breweries was established in 1987 in the serene landscapes of South Sikkim. The company’s management and operations are handled by Danny and his family. Denzongpa envisioned creating a premium beer brand that resonated with the unique culture and taste preferences of the region. In 2005, he further cemented his position in the Indian beer industry by establishing Denzong Breweries in Odisha, significantly expanding his presence in eastern India. In 2009 he acquired Rhino Breweries in Assam, one of the key competitors in the northeastern beer market. Over the years, the brewery steadily expanded its production capacity, eventually producing close to three million cases annually.

The company’s flagship brands, such as Dansberg, Himalayan Blue, He-Man 9000, and Yeti, have become household names in the northeastern states. These beers are popular for their quality and affordability, helping Yuksom Breweries carve out a niche in an industry dominated by larger players like Kingfisher and Budweiser.
The Battle with Vijay Mallya’s UB Group
In 2009, as India’s beer market was rapidly expanding, the northeast remained the final frontier. Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries had dominated most of the country but had yet to establish a foothold in the seven northeastern states. With eyes set on Assam’s Rhino Agencies, a growing brewery in the region, Mallya aimed to break into this untapped market. However, Danny Denzongpa, determined to dominate the northeast with his Yuksom Breweries, outmaneuvered him. Upon hearing of Mallya’s plans, Denzongpa swiftly acquired Rhino Agencies himself, securing his company’s position in the region. As a result, UB Group never managed to acquire a brewery in the northeast, choosing to stay out of production in that market.
Economic Impact on the Northeast
Yuksom Breweries isn’t just a business success story; it’s also a driver of economic growth in northeastern India. The company contributes approximately ₹100 crore annually to the regional economy through taxes, employment, and local procurement. It has created jobs for over 250 people directly and supported many more indirectly through its supply chain.
The brewery also sources raw materials and services locally, providing a steady income for farmers, transporters, and other small businesses in the region. This local engagement has made Yuksom Breweries a key economic player in the northeast, fostering growth and stability in an area that often faces economic challenges.
